Electric Vehicle Chargers

If you have an Electric Vehicle or ev, you will need a way to charge it. The granny charger that plugs into a standard 13amp household socket which is often supplied with the vehicle is not an ideal solution as this is extremely slow.
The safest and most efficient way, is to install an EV Charger or charge point.
Before a charge point can be installed your existing electrical supply needs to be inspected, this is to verify that the incoming supply can cope with the increased electrical demand and to make sure that the charger can be installed safely. Some properties still have a 60 or 80 amp main fuse which when adding a 32amp car charger may not be enough.
The DNO (Distribution Network Operator, people that look after the cables in the road and supply to your meter) have to be informed that a charger is to be installed. Also as this will be a new circuit, the local building authority will need notification and Part P certification given.
There are many EV chargers and all are required to be ‘smart’, some chargers will work with solar panels allowing you to use only excess generated electricity to charge your car.
It may be required to set up load limiting to avoid overloading your main fuse during your peak demands.
